It had to be done! E1

After a few weeks back in the UK and the last fortnight helping our daughter with some ‘home improvements’ we found ourselves with some time on our hands.  On Saturday morning I woke up with a ‘cunning plan’ in my mind…...

24 hours later……….. we find ourselves on the ferry from Dover to Calais!

We did some research and found a good price with Myferrylink (a new kid on the ferry block) so we booked it and drove down from Glasgow on Saturday.  We left at 13:00 and arrived 500 miles later at 23:00, checked in and pulled up in the ferry terminal at the front of the boarding queue ready for the 07:00 ferry the following morning.

The loading was quick and efficient and we were on our way!

An hour and a half later we arrived in France and set off on the latest ‘Wolf’ adventure!  We drove towards Dunkirk then South to the little town of Cassel in Frence Flanders where we night stopped. The town is a fortified, quintessentially Flemish village and is built on the highest hill in Flanders (176 metre!) and has all-round panoramic views of the verdant Flanders Plain.

The town square….

We thought this sculpture at the entrance to the town park was modern…...

Until we saw this photo…...

And this description…...

This windmill is perched on the highest point in the town to catch the wind (it was really windy when we were there!)

The town cemetery is in stark contrast to the one’s we saw in Denmark…. very austere and rundown.

The next day we continued Southeast and night stopped in the town of Crespin which is on the border with Belgium.  A cheeky cycle ride to Belgium was obligatory of course!  If you look to the left of the photo you will see shop after shop after shop selling ‘Tabac’.  I guess it’s really cheap here!

No further pictures of either Crespin or Quiévrain as they are both very ordinary (this part of Belgium has a very run down and depressed feel to it).

That’s enough for the first blog entry on this trip.  Our next stop will be Charleville Meziers….
